"This course has been the apt course for a just over beginner ML enthusiastic student like me. The best part I liked was that we are taught about the most recent advancements in ML with conceptual clarity. Exceptional teaching, exceptional selection of materials, exceptional course structure."
Thanks. That is the idea.
"The assignments are really good."
Thanks. I like to keep the assignments for coding practice, and exams for testing conceptual understanding.
"Course slides are not very explanatory. They are just a repetition of research papers given in the reading material." (Several students gave this feedback.)
Yes, the slides, for now, are meant to aid me in the classroom instruction, and are not to be taken as course notes. My suggestion is to skim through at least one paper in the "Reading" section for the week before coming to the class. By the next iteration of the course, I plan to have more standalone course notes.
"Difficulty level is extremely high."
I am sorry about that. I assume that students have done well on a basic course on pattern recognition and machine learning.
"The material for the course is a bit huge in amount. Understanding the slides needs a lot of support of the reading material i.e. self-study and reading forms the basis of the understanding rather than the class lecture which adds to clarity if you are through with the material already.
I am sorry about that. This course is not for someone casually interested in machine learning, but to prepare students to master advanced concepts.
"The content is as marvelous as it should be for an "advanced ML" course."
Thanks. That is what I was going for.
"This course should not be in the forth year, it should have been in 3rd year so that it may be relevant for third year intern as well as to have more time to do research in the field of deep learning."
Good idea. However, this has to be taken up at the Department Undergraduate/Postgraduate Program Committees.
"Since its a new course, it would be very helpful if you can provide a model question paper for midsem so that we can prepare accordingly."
Good idea. Done.
"The idea and content of this course is one of the most innovative of all courses at IITG."
Thanks. I intend to keep updating it over the years.
"As it been conducted for the first time, there is scope for improvement… I'm sure this course will only become better with time."
Yes. Course notes are lacking. Simply following slides will not help. Slides also need improvement. In the next iterations, I plan to add course notes, video lectures, and more explanation on slides. For now, my suggestion is to skim through at least one paper in the "Reading" section for the week before coming to the class.
"Your teaching and slides are top-notch. I am an intuitive learner and slightly mathematically-handicapped. So, I truly appreciate your efforts in making the course friendly for people like us."
Thanks. I am myself mathematically challenged to some extent. I like to visualize concepts. However, I plan to add more mathematics in the course notes in the next iteration of the course.
"I would like to thank the instructor for his efforts in preparing the course material. The course slides are understandable if attended the classes. The way of teaching is really good."
Thanks.
"I like the way of your teaching and also course materials, assignment was very good (as you are teaching from recent research papers)."
Thanks.
